Twilight for a roadside icon…and the man who's keeping the light alive
Above: What may end up being the last HoJo's on the planet, the Butler's Lake Placid, NY.
(Lake Placid, NY) Ronald Butler is a man on a mission. He's just spied something wrong with the salad bar — his salad bar — at the Lake Placid (N.Y.) Howard Johnson's restaurant. The items in the buffet table haven't been changed recently enough for a man who's been ensuring freshness in his beloved eatery since 1956. Yet on this particular day, Howard Johnson's is busy as usual, and there aren't any members of the waitstaff available to replenish the supplies. So the longtime restaurant co-owner does what he does on so many days: dons some plastic gloves, rolls up his sleeves, grabs a gigantic vat of lettuce and goes to work. Before long, every tray in the salad bar has been refilled, every item from applesauce to water chestnuts fresh as fresh can be. Finally, Butler leans back from the long, food-laden table and smiles. Mission accomplished. CLICK HERE to read the entire article.

Nov. 9, 2008: Added Pics To HoJoLand's "HoJo Ghosts" Page CLICK HERE
(Nov. 9, 2008) HoJo fans probably don't agree with the recent demand for "change," at least when it comes to the tradition of HoJo's Restaurants. In the summer of 2005, after 46 years serving Times Square, this Rubenstein family owned HoJo's closed for good. It has since been razed and will soon be home to the flagship store of apparel retailer American Eagle. In addition to four stories of retail space, the site will host a huge amount of signage. But, while the "Eagle" will soon land at the famous "crossroads of the world," many folks will continue to have warm memories of the grand old lady of the Howard Johnson's Restaurant empire.

HoJo's Frozen Food Manufacturer Shuts Down
(Nov. 10, 2008) For the second time in the last few years, a company that manufactures and distributes the Howard Johnson's line of retail frozen foods has gone out of business. America's Kitchen, the Atlanta-based food manufacturer which had the exclusive contract to manufacture such signature HoJo products as HoJo's Macaroni & Cheese, Toastees and Chicken Croquettes, shut down in May, 2008.
This follows the dissolution of Brockton, Massachusetts-based former HoJo food manufacturer Fairfield Farms Kitchens, which closed a few years ago. At that time, La Mancha Group, which owns the license for HoJo food and beverage, retained the services of America's Kitchen to allow the continuance of HoJo's retail products. HoJoLand.com continues to receive numerous emails from consumers wondering where all ther HoJo's retail food favorites have gone. HoJoLand has been unsuccessful in getting word from La Mancha Group as to the current status of the retail food products. For an in-depth story on the woes of America's Kitchen, visit the Atlanta Journal Constitution HERE.
